There is a theory, rarely discussed in public, that politicians are not ruthless, greedy and selfish megalomaniacs at all, but warm, affectionate and rather sensitive teddy bears who hold the interests of ordinary people close to their hearts. Of course, this is utter nonsense, which Yes Prime Minister only helps to prove.
In this rather mundane computer spin-off of the TV show, you take on the daunting role of the Prime Minister, in this case Jim Hacker. Being the political visionary and Churchill visionary that you are, your main goal is to stay in power for as long as you can, a week if possible. In fact, the game simulates a typical work week.
To do this, you must keep people happy through the usual methods: disinformation, concealment and outright lies. At the same time, he must beware of the political banana skins that his political enemies so thoughtfully place in his path. There is also a series of crises that are meant to test your political prowess, along with your former allies Bernard Woolley and Sir Humphrey Appleby.
The game focuses on the Prime Minister's room in the House of Commons, which is graphically displayed on screen in clear if uninspired detail. It is now packed with a variety of high-tech gadgets. On the one hand, it has a telephone in which it can receive incoming calls from various characters. If that wasn't enough, there's also an intercom system so Sir Humphrey and Bernard can communicate with you…usually to remind you of something you've forgotten to do.
Notes arrive on your desk with rapid regularity, and you should also check your calendar, located on your desk, for the day's appointments. A safe, carefully concealed by a British flag, adorns the far wall. Unfortunately, you won't find any skeleton prime minister here, just his current rating in the polls.
All of these items can be accessed by simply moving the cross-screen hand to the item you want.
Much of the action and humor in the Yes Prime Minister game comes in the form of conversations with other characters. Unfortunately, once one of these has started, you must see it through to the end, making policy decisions by choosing one of several numbered options. The Trade Minister, for example, has been charged with drunk driving. Should you confess or stage a cover-up?
Similarly, when the Irish Prime Minister asks for his advice on the corridors at Haydock, is he serious or is this an elaborate message from MI5? Should Britain accept France's demand to change the name of Waterloo station?
Yes Prime Minister is not the most exciting of games. It will appeal to people who have enjoyed the TV series, but the humor is flat in comparison. The conversations drag on a bit and, like other spin-offs that take the same multiple-choice format - Adrian Mole and the Archers, for example - where there's too much reading and not enough participation.
