Surely many of you have previously heard the name of PSS, the English house that created this strategy program. Of course, when talking about PSS in relation to strategy, they are talking about quality. Now then, ANNALS OF ROME is, at first, a somewhat confusing program and perhaps too slow when it comes to drawing the graphics, few graphics, that appear on the screen.

We are facing a game that places us in a time around two and a half centuries BC, in full expansion of the Roman Empire but also involved in all the courtly intrigues that were hatched behind the scenes.

Annals of Rome was first released in 1986. It is a strategy game that puts the player in front of the Roman Republic, trying to manage its vast resources and keep the borders safe against the dozens of barbarian hordes and rival civilizations, in addition to deal with politics, internal conflicts or taxes, among other aspects.

It begins in 273 BC, we will be under the control of the Roman Empire, where the objective will not be military victory, but to survive as long as possible. In the first years we will be at war with Carthage, Greece, Gaul, etc. Some of these ancient powers have been conquered and annexed, but will remain in rebellion until the moment of their historic death. Then new powers will succeed them that will try to destroy the Roman Empire. We will face 13 active states under the control of the computer.

Our first objective will be to appoint a Roman dictator and run the fate of the Empire with him. From the beginning and as is logical, we will be the ones who make the most far-reaching decisions and the ones who will try, by all means, to defend Rome from any invasion and at the same time extend our domains. For this we have total control over the army, the legions, the treasury... we will apply the tax rates that we deem appropriate, we will designate the rulers of the conquered regions, etc, etc...

The game is played in two windows. The first is the troop movement window which is used to control the placement of troops in the roman empire or for attacking the states governed by the computer. This window shows the number of forces for all players, inflation, the popularity and national score of the Roman Empire, and our score. The last step for the player in this window is to set the tax rate, between 1 and 2% (higher taxes cause higher inflation). In the next window, the player decides which of the 21 members of the Senate will receive command of the various Roman armies. To help you in your decision-making, all members of the Senate are listed with numbers, the first of two indicating their military capacity and loyalty, respectively. The last number indicates your age. If the popularity rule falls below 2 (popularity is measured with a range between -5 and 5), the armies with the disloyal commanders may revolt and try to take Rome. If this happens before 50 BC, the rebel will succeed and be declared a dictator, and if this happens after, he will become the new emperor, leading to a dynasty.

ANNALS OF ROME, in principle, is only available in the French and English languages and although a good knowledge of either of these two languages is not decisive, it is necessary to invest in reading the manual since without being an excessively complicated game it requires the unmasking of a lot of concepts that are abbreviated on the screen and that are the ones that designate the regions, the armies, the actions, the quantities, etc.

ANNALS OF ROME is a game that may seem somewhat convoluted, but in the end, if we have managed to understand the development of the program, we will come to the conclusion that it is not so much. The presentation, as usual (we refer to the graph), is very simple. The presentation of data is abundant and correct at all times.

Annals of Rome, despite its poor graphics and interface, had a good 85% rating at the time. Due to its popularity, the game was ported to various computer platforms of the time.

Custom labels to print them. Over the years due to their use, the labels are spoiled and lose their color and quality. Now we try to adapt the closest thing to the best of our abilities, the labels so that they can be printed and replaced or for those who work with a copy of the program and preserve the original disk. Measure in 3 “high: 7.00 cm - width: 7.10 cm. The first image corresponds to the original label of the game, the second is the same label modified to be able to replace the broken one and the third and fourth image is for the 3.5 “discs.
